MYERS PARK NEWS

26 February 2002

The big news for our neighborhood is the approval by the City Commission of the Myers Park Historic District.  On October 24, 2001, many of our neighbors came to City Hall to speak to the commissioners in favor of the Historic Designation.  A few neighbors dissented, but most of the opposition came from people who don’t live in our neighborhood.  Jeanie Conner, Robert Olmstead and the rest of the Myers Park Neighborhood Association worked tirelessly with Beth LaCivita and City Planning Department staff to get this designation passed, making Myers Park the first Residential Historic District in Tallahassee.

On December 16th, the Myers Park Neighborhood Association held a Cookie Swap and sold luminary kits.  Treasurer Cindy Cosper reports the fund raiser made $300, of which $86 was donated to The Shelter. On December 17th, many of our neighbors got together, despite the rain, to serenade the neighborhood with Christmas carols. The luminaries throughout the neighborhood were beautiful and the carollers had a wonderful, though damp, evening. Thanks to Ingolf Askevold for driving the truck and trailer full of carollers.

Laura Olmstead is trying to put together a neighborhood garage sale.  Get rid of your old treasures.  Anybody who is interested please e-mail her at myersparkna@yahoo.com or call 224-8330.

Albert Trull, our representative on the city’s South Monroe Sector Committee reports that the committee met on January 31 and elected Nancy McGrath as chair.  The group discussed the legal position of the committee related to Florida’s Sunshine Law and reviewed the committee’s bylaws.  The committee will last six months and will host a workshop for the public in April. Anyone who is interested in participating in the South Monroe Sector Committee should contact Albert Trull at 224-3442.  The next South Monroe Sector Committee meeting is scheduled for February 25, from 3:30 to 6:30 in the Tallahassee Room on the 2nd floor in City Hall.  The meeting will focus on stormwater and flooding issues. For more information on the South Monroe sector visit http://talgov.com/citytlh/planning/cmplan/sector.html

Chris Sands is organizing a neighborhood group to participate in the Super Clean Sweep sponsored by Super-Lube and Keep Tallahassee/Leon County Beautiful. The sweep will take place on Saturday, March 2, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.  If you’d like to pitch in, plan to meet at the tennis courts in Myers Park at 8:30 a.m. on March 2. The Myers Park Neighborhood Association Board met on Sunday, February 10.  They heard Commissioner Meisburg and our neighbor Joan Helms present a proposal to support the Partnership for Alcohol Responsibility.  The Board voted to have the PAR information presented to the general membership for a vote to support the project.

The general membership meeting will be held Thursday, March 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.  The planned meeting location is the community meeting room in Myers Park.

The Board authorized Robert Olmstead to start a petition to have the City install traffic calming on Meridian Street.  If you would like to sign the petition, contact Robert at myersparkna@yahoo.com or call 224-8330.

Myers Park had its share of crimes in 2001, but data from the Tallahassee Police Department confirm what most of us already know—that Myers Park experiences few serious crimes.  If you’d like information on crimes in our neighborhood, contact Deborah Page at TPD via e-mail at paged@talgov.com .  Chris Sands has mapped some of the data.  You can direct questions about the data to him at ctsands@tfn.net or call 224-7453.

Robert Olmstead has the official history of how the Myers Park Historic District designation came about in the form of a large, spiral bound report.  Anyone interested in purchasing a copy should contact Robert at myersparkna@yahoo.com or call 224-8330.  The cost of printing is approximately $25.

The Board approved prize money for a contest to develop a logo for our historic district. The logo will be used for signs that designate the boundaries of the historic district. Neighbors are encouraged to participate.  Details of the contest will be presented for your approval at the general membership meeting on March 7.
